Concert “From Sanjo to Shinawi”

On Sunday 20th May 2012, musicians Il-Ryun Chung and Hong Yoo, who live in Berlin, will make a guest appearance at Kunstwerk. On traditional instruments such as the bamboo flute (“Daegǔm”), the hourglass drum (“Janggu”) and the gong (“Ching”), they will play both old Korean music and their own compositions.  “Sanjo” is a traditional form of music in which one solo instrument is accompanied by rhythm instruments. “Shinawi” dates back to the shamanistic music of Korea and stands out for the spontaneous improvisation of the musicians.

Between pieces, the artists will present their instruments and give insights into the tradition of Korean music.

The concert, which is sponsored by the cultural department of the Korean embassy, starts at 4.00 pm and entrance is free.

The Musicians

Il-Ryun Chung, who was born in Frankfurt am Main, studied guitar and composition. After meeting Korean Master Drummer Kim Duk-Soo, he began to devote himself intensively to Korean percussion music. In 2001 together with Jocelyn Clark, he founded the “IIIZ+” ensemble and six years later, together with Matthias Leupold on violin, he founded “Duo Berlin Strings & Percussion”. Il-Ryun Chun was a Berlin Senate scholarship student for Composition and is subsequently in receipt of four composition commissions. In 1994, he won the top prize in the composition competition at the Berlin Guitar and Chamber Music Festival for his duo for flute and guitar, “Movement in Circles II”.

Hong Yoo was born in Korea and studied Korean bamboo flute at Seoul National University. His repertoire includes both traditional Korean and new music. He is a member of the JeongGaAkHoe ensemble and has taken part in numerous concert tours, festival appearances and CD recordings. Hong Yoo has received multiple awards, including winning the Dong-A-Concours special award and 1st prize at the Jeonju festival. As well as Korean bamboo flute, Hong Yoo also plays the instruments Janggu and Ching.
